Dear India, You've Got Mail: World Post Day 2026

Remember the sound? Two short rings of a cycle bell, and a voice at the gate: "Daakiya!"

Long before blue ticks, that was our notification. Dadi stopped rolling rotis. Kids raced to the door. Someone's exam result had come. Someone's son had written from the border. Someone's Diwali had arrived as a money order, folded crisp.

This World Post Day, 9 October, India Post opens National Postal Week. So let's admit something. We think we've outgrown the post office. The post office hasn't outgrown us.

If Indian Railways is India's backbone, India Post is its nervous system. Trains carry us. The post carries everything we couldn't carry ourselves: news, money, rakhis, appointment letters, love.

And it goes where the tracks stop. India Post runs about 1.65 lakh post offices, the largest postal network in the world. Over 90% of them are in villages. On average, one post office serves about 7,300 people. Behind the counters stand around 2.78 lakh Gramin Dak Sevaks, the village postmen and postmistresses who, for crores of Indians, are the face of the government.

High in Spiti, the village of Hikkim has a post office more than 14,000 feet above sea level, widely called the highest post office in the world. It opened in 1983. No mobile signal. No internet. Just a postmaster, a rubber stamp and a promise that your letter will get down the mountain.

Now go to Srinagar. On Dal Lake, a carved houseboat is a working post office. Your postcard leaves with a postmark of a boatman rowing a shikara. Try getting that on email.

Here's the revelation. India Post isn't really in the letter business. It's in the trust business.

For a farmer in Vidarbha or a widow in Jharkhand, the post office is where the pension lands, MGNREGA wages arrive, and a Sukanya Samriddhi account quietly grows for a daughter's wedding or degree. Since 2018, India Post Payments Bank has turned the postman's bag into a bank branch on two wheels. During the COVID lockdown, when the country stood still, postmen brought medicines and cash to people's doors.

The network is still growing where it's needed most. In recent years, India Post has opened over 4,900 post offices in Left Wing Extremism-affected districts and thousands more in unbanked villages, so that banking is within 5 km of every village. That's not nostalgia. That's nation-building, one counter at a time.

On 15 August 1972, Shriram Bhikaji Velankar, a Maharashtrian officer in the Ministry of Communications, gave India the six-digit PIN code. Suddenly a letter to Rampur knew which Rampur. Every food order and online parcel you get today still rides on his idea.

In May 2025, India Post went a step further with DIGIPIN, a 10-character digital address for every 4m by 4m patch of India, built with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO. Your doorstep now has a digital fingerprint.

Not everything stays. On 1 September 2025, Registered Post, the trusted service of court notices and job applications, was folded into Speed Post. Many of us sighed. But that's how an institution that began with 701 offices in 1854 is still standing: it changes quietly, and it still shows up.

Young readers, here's a dare. Buy a postcard. Write to your nani in your worst handwriting. Watch what happens when it reaches her.

Older readers, tell the kids about the money order, the inland letter, the telegram that made the whole mohalla hold its breath. Some stories should be delivered by hand.

At Luv My India, we believe the Indian postal service is the most underrated love story in the country. Railways connect our cities. India Post connects our hearts, from a Himalayan village to a houseboat to your own front gate. It asks for no applause, just a correct PIN code. This National Postal Week, thank your daakiya. Then write to someone you love. Some feelings deserve a stamp.
